Muted Horn hosts Yves Panneels, Chairman of Het Geuzegenootschap vzw - The Gueuze Society, on Saturday 14th October at 6:00 pm (18:00) for a lecture on one of our favorite topics....Lambic!

Yves organizes the renowned international gueuze and kriek festival called 'The Night of Great Thirst' which is held in Belgium every other year. In the off-years, the festival is held at the world famous beer bar Ebenezer's Pub in Lovell, Maine (USA).

Yves is also a board member of HORAL - Hoge Raad voor Ambachtelijke Lambiekbieren vzw and operates with his brother Kurt and his parents the #1 rated beer bar, In de Verzekering tegen de Grote Dorst Eizeringen in Belgium. To celebrate the 175th anniversary of the pub, the Gueuze Society is organising a "Great Thirst World Tour" that already touched down earlier this year in San Francisco, Lovell and New York City. Now it's Berlin's turn.. .

The lecture will be about the typology of lambic beers, important technological improvements in the lambic sector since 1990, and urban lambic legends.

This beer had a rough start in life, it almost didn't make it. 
On brew day, the steam unit broke just before the boil start at 95°C, and the first half-batch had to be dumped. Watching 2000L of 18.5°P wort go down the drain is depressing, but at least it gave the guys an idea for the name... 
Thankfully, the spare parts arrived on the next day and the steam unit was repaired. They could brew the other half of the beer!

Berlin-based gypsy brewers Georg Fuerst and Lukasz Wiacek from FUERST WIACEK commit to making modern, balanced beers. Before doing their own thing, they travelled the world to learn more about brewing from some of the best breweries out there. They draw inspiration from their experience apprenticing at Põhjala Brewery, Beavertown Brewery, Half Acre Beer Company and Boneyard Beer. 
While this beer was fermenting and maturing, FUERST WIACEK headed to the US for some field research, tasting fresh IPAs. the trip took them to Bissell Brothers, Hill Farmstead Brewery, Tree House Brewing Co., INC, Trillium Brewing Company, Interboro NYC, and Tired Hands Brewing Company. While in New York, they met up with Finback Brewery to a collaboration IPA together, which will be available in cans soon.

Farm-to-barrel brewing is about finding the best in locally sourced fruit and blending it into beers inspired by the great brewing traditions of the world. These beers will be a celebration of the harvest season, as the breweries highlight quality organic produce selected for each recipe.

We'll offer seven different beers on tap and three others in bottles, each featuring a different fruit, grain, berry, or hop.

Join us at 13:30 on Saturday, November 18th for an afternoon dedicated to bringing together coffee and beer, and exploring how the two can combine in some delicious coffee beers. There will be a guided coffee cupping followed by a tasting of 5 x 0,15L matching coffee beers, with each beer created using the same type of coffee as featured in the cupping.

Inspired by Good Beer Hunting's Uppers & Downers festival, we hope this event will help people gain a better understanding of the terroir of specialty coffee as it relates to beer - comparing flavours and aromas from different regions, elevations, and genetic profiles, and why certain coffees might suit some beer styles better than others. 

:: COFFEE CUPPING :: 
Cupping is one of the coffee tasting techniques used by professionals to evaluate the aroma and flavour profile of a coffee. This guided cupping will be lead by Stuart Ritson, who will provide an insight into coffee sensory analysis, coffee flavours and how this influences coffee beers.

Stuart has worked in the coffee industry for the last six years: as a Barista, cafe manager, and cafe consultant. Now he works in the green bean industry, sourcing specialty coffee for some of the best roasters in Europe. He’s spent those last six years learning as much as possible about the world of coffee and happens to also have a great love for beer.
